Starting from seventh place on the grid, Pitt battled hard with the other leading riders in the early stages of the 16-lap race around the iconic 5.8km Monza circuit. However, Pitt slipped back at the Parabolic turn on lap seven and was unable to get back into contention for podium honours.

His Hannspree Ten Kate Honda team-mate, Kenan Sofuoglu, took his CBR600RR to ninth place at the flag after struggling with corner entry and exit issues. The Turkish ace, who won the opening race of the season at Phillip Island, is confident of improvements for round six, however, which takes place at Kyalami in South Africa next Sunday.

Andrew Pitt - 5th

The bike was actually really good at the start of the race - the balance of the chassis felt fine and I was able to push at the front with the others. But, as the race progressed, it became clear that we were really over-working the rear tyre. I had problems controlling the bike into and out of turns, especially the entry. In the end I was having to use the gearbox to slow down because if I used the brakes too much, the rear would just want to come round and overtake me. We're definitely going in the right direction with the new bike, though, and just need to work on the rear setting a little to get a result next week.

Kenan Sofuoglu - 9th

I can only say that I am really very disappointed with this weekend here in Monza. I had a very big crash in qualifying yesterday and, although I was not too badly injured, I lost quite a lot of confidence. I have some problems with braking and accelerating but we will work hard to put these right in time for the next race in South Africa. I know that I am in a very professional team and I trust the guys that I work with. I will also do my best to improve the rider performance and hopefully we can all get a good result next week.

Ronald ten Kate – team manager

It’s been a challenging weekend for us again here at Monza, but we can take a positive from the fact that, during the first half of the race, Andrew’s bike felt OK for him – something we could see from the way he was riding. We can use his data to prepare for next weekend’s race in Kyalami, because it’s about time that we start to bring home some results if we want to play an active role in the outcome of this championship.

Starting from sixth place on the grid, Rea was fortunate to avoid the first corner melée in the first 18-lap outing which led to an hour’s delay in the schedule. In the restart, won by Italian Michel Fabrizio, Rea dropped to 11th before fighting back through the field to take fifth.

The Northern Ireland rider went one better in the second outing at the legendary 5.8km Monza circuit, as Ben Spies took his fifth win of the campaign. Rea put in his fastest lap in the second half of the race, vindicating the recent changes made to his CBR1000RR by his Hannspree Ten Kate Honda crew.

Rea’s team-mate, Carlos Checa, finished in ninth and tenth places in the two outings after starting from ninth place on the grid.

Jonathan Rea – 5th and 4th

We just had a few problems with the bike in the latter stages of the race – I don’t know whether it’s the light fuel load or what, but it developed a bit of chatter which was quite hard to dial out after race one. I got busted by a pretty hard move by Laconi in that race and, by the time I’d got back past him, I’d lost touch with the leading group. In Race 2 I got a much better start and tried really hard to catch Fabrizio and Kiyo, but they had a little more left in the tank at the end. Still, I’ve equalled my best Superbike result and we’ve shown that we can race at the front now. I didn’t quite achieve a podium today but hopefully the results are some reward for all the hard work the team has put in over the last few weeks.

Carlos Checa – 9th and 10th

Both races were pretty much the same for me – I had quite bad chatter on the entry into corners and a lack of side grip on the exit, but the entry problem was worse. It was a little better in race two and I was able to stay with the leading riders a little longer. But then I started to lose a few tenths here and there, and then I got tangled with a few other riders and made some mistakes. We will check the settings of the other guys in the team and see where we can improve things in time for next weekend in Kyalami.

Ronald ten Kate – team manager

Those were two solid results for Jonathan which are a reward for and credit to all the hard work that the crew has put in to find a new development of the bike since we left Valencia. We will have to look at Carlos’s particular issues but we are definitely moving forward and aim to take the next step in South Africa.

The two races were won by Michel Fabrizio and Ben Spies during an eventful schedule that was delayed by a first turn crash in race one, when several riders were injured and oil spilled on the circuit.

Starting from third place on the grid, Kiyonari dropped back to 17th place at the restart but fought his was back into contention. Entering the last lap in fifth place Kiyonari benefited from Spies running out of fuel and Max Biaggi’s 20s penalty for cutting a chicane.

Kiyonari had already returned to his pit-box before being ushered back for the podium ceremony.

In the second 18-lapper around the historic 5.8km Monza circuit, Kiyonari got a better start and was battling in the leading group throughout the race before securing his second podium of the day.

Ryuichi Kiyonari – 3rd and 3rd

I am so happy to get these results for myself and for the team. We have worked very hard to find a good setting with the CBR1000RR this season but we have not always had good luck. My start was very bad in race one but I was able to fight back lap-by-lap during the race, although I was very surprised and happy when they told me I was third. In the second race I had a better start and I must say I am a little disappointed. I had the speed to catch Fabrizio but not quite enough to get past him. But this is my best result for a long time and I hope it indicates the start of a better part of the season for me and the team.

Ronald ten Kate – team manager

I am more than satisfied with Kiyo-san’s two podium finishes today, although I must honestly say that, especially in race one, there might have been the chance of a win if not for his bad start. Dropping from third on the grid to seventeenth on the first lap is quite exceptional, but what is more exceptional is fighting back again to third place! It’s good to get confirmation of our set-up and electronics changes and hopefully we can be even more competitive in Kyalami next weekend.

Pole position was taken by America’s Ben Spies as Rea’s Hannspree Ten Kate Honda team-mate, Carlos Checa, qualified with the ninth fastest Superpole time.

Rea went into Superpole with the third fastest time, but the three-stage shoot-out for final grid positions has proved a lottery in previous rounds and the Northern Irish rider slipped back to sixth.

Jonathan Rea – P6, 1’45.170s

We were definitely aiming for a front row start because that’s where we’ve been for most of the weekend, so I’m a little disappointed to have missed out on that. But the race pace we’ve shown is pretty good and top six is not really too bad. I had to do it all on my spare bike when the number one machine developed a problem right at the start of free practice, just before Superpole, so the guys didn’t get a chance to fix it. Of course a good start is paramount here, but I think we can get a plan together tonight and, if that plan works, there’s no reason why I can’t be right up there tomorrow. I’ll try to be aggressive for the first couple of laps to make sure that the fast guys don’t get away. After that, we’ll see what happens.

Carlos Checa – P9, 1’45.166

Well, as you can see, I missed Superpole 3 by maybe one tenth but, really, ninth is not such a bad place to start here – maybe better than eighth or seventh because you are on the outside. We struggled a little to find a perfect setting but qualifying is not especially easy here. I need two good starts tomorrow because our race pace is pretty good but it’s a very particular circuit, Monza. I hope I have the same feeling with the bike tomorrow because overall it’s pretty good and my strategy is to be in the leading group from the start because the tyres are working quite well over longer distance. Then I hope to still be in that group near the end.

Ronald ten Kate – team manager

I’m really happy to see our riders still in the top ten and near the front after Superpole, which hasn’t always treated us so well in earlier rounds this season. We all know that a good start is very important here at Monza and at least Jonathan and Carlos are in a position that gives them a good opportunity to remain in touch with the leading group. Hopefully, riders and crew can harvest the fruits of all their development work since Valencia because everyone truly deserves it.

The two 22-lap encounters around the historic 4.55km circuit were won by American Ben Spies and Japanese rider Noriyuki Haga – the latter extending his championship lead to 60 points.

Having qualified in 11th place on the grid, Rea had a difficult start to race one and suffered from arm pump in the later stages to take seventh place. In race two, he climbed up to fifth place, but the front runners were too far ahead to keep contact with.

His team-mate, Spaniard Carlos Checa, crashed out of race one at the end of Assen’s back straight, but fought back to take seventh in race two.

Jonathan Rea – 7th and 5th

Well, the results are better than in Valencia and, to be honest, they had to be. It’s no secret that we’ve had some problems, but we’ve done a lot of thinking in the last three weeks and I really want to thank everyone in the team who dug deep to find some solutions. We came here with a good setting and had a couple of unrelated issues in qualifying, which led to a difficult starting position, but the bike is really going in a direction now that I’m happy with. I got a really bad start in race one, which was followed by a bit of arm pump. That was much better in race two and I really started to enjoy riding the bike again. Unfortunately, by the time I got some clear track in front of me, the leading four had gone. But I’m really pumped for Monza – I feel like I’ve got a really good working relationship with the team now and we’re definitely going in the right direction.

Carlos Checa – DNF and 7th

The first race was not so good because I lost the front at the end of the back straight and that was that. In the second race there was a bit of chatter again, but I think this was to do with the tyre, because the feeling of the bike was quite good. I got bad arm pump after six laps, which made it difficult to ride.

Ronald ten Kate – team manager

I think we’ve definitely made a step forward with the CBR1000RR this weekend – unfortunately, we were not able to cash in on it today. Although we’re not satisfied with the results, we’re happy with the developments we’ve made and with the direction we’re going in. We’re now really looking forward to Monza.

The race was won by Honda rider, Eugene Laverty – his second win of the season – who started from the front row alongside Sofuoglu. The Turkish rider got a great start and led in the early laps before dropping back.

Pitt found that many of the problems that had prevented him qualifying higher than 10th, had been reduced to allow him to challenge for the lead. Battling in the leading group, the Australian tried to take advantage when two of his rivals ran wide at Assen’s turn four. However, he lost the front of his CBR600RR and then had his left arm run over, preventing him from picking up his stricken machine.

Kenan Sofuoglu – 5th

I am very disappointed with this result because I felt so much confidence going into this race and starting from the front row. Unfortunately, the back section of the circuit, where I was losing a lot of time during qualifying, was still a problem for me and I had to push so hard in the other areas of the lap. After Andrew crashed in front of me, the gap to the leading group was too big, but at least I was able to pick up some points.

Andrew Pitt – DNF

The feeling with the front of the bike was a lot better in warm-up, after the guys worked late into the night – so thanks to them for that. It meant that with a good start I felt able to challenge for the win because I had the pace of the leaders. I was still struggling a bit with the front of the bike, though, and I was pushing hard everywhere because I just didn’t want to finish third, fourth or fifth. When the Yamahas tangled in front of me and ran wide, I dived underneath – maybe a little too enthusiastically and I lost the front. I don’t know who ran over my arm, but I lost all feeling in it temporarily and couldn’t pick up the bike. There’s nothing broken but it’ll probably be a little sore tomorrow.

Ronald ten Kate – team manager

That was not really the result we had hoped for. Until mid-race, everything was going fine and looking good with Kenan and Andrew dicing in the leading group. When Andrew crashed, Kenan lost the connection with the front runners. I think we need to improve our setting earlier in the weekend because it’s taking too long to find the race set-up at the moment – Sunday morning is too late. We’ll work hard to improve this area for Monza.

Ten Kate Honda Motorcycle Racing’s Ryuichi Kiyonari approaches round four of the World Superbike championship at Assen in Holland this weekend (24-26 April) with renewed confidence and seeking improved results.

With a best result of fourth so far this season, the Japanese rider struggled with grip problems at the last round in Valencia, although his team has been working around the clock since then to resolve the issues.

After the last race I went back to Japan for a week for the wedding of Mamoru Moriwaki’s daughter, so it was good to spend a short time relaxing with friends.
I must admit it was a little bit frustrating to ride with the problems we had at Valencia. But the team has been working really hard to prepare for Assen and I am confident that they have found some improvements for me to try. Last year was not such a good result, but we know what the problem was there – basically, rider too aggressive on throttle! I like the circuit at Assen, though, so I will try very hard this weekend to get some good results for the team.

Ronald ten Kate – team manager

In spite of a fourth place in Qatar, it has been clear that our results so far this season have not been what we would have expected, so we have been looking very closely at how we can improve the feeling with the throttle on Kiyo-san’s CBR1000RR. We have made quite a big change to the bike and this is both mechanical and in the electronics. We were able to test the changes last week and now we go to Assen feeling much more positive that we can improve things at our home race.

Both encounters were won by Kiyonari’s compatriot, Noriyuki Haga, as the Honda Genuine Accessories-backed rider finished in 12th and ninth places at the 4.005km Ricardo Tormo circuit.

Kiyonari had shown good pace on race tyres during the early part of the weekend, but a difficult Superpole yesterday left the Japanese rider in ninth place on the grid. and he found it more difficult to match the times in today’s races.

Ryuichi Kiyonari – 12th & 9th

In the first race, I thought on the sighting lap that the rear felt a little strange but thought it was just because the tyre was cold. When the race started I knew I was going to have some problems and I nearly highsided on the way into the first right-hander at turn three. I had no grip for the remaining 23 laps so 12th was the best I could do. In race two, the start was OK but Troy Corser ran into the side of me in the last turn early on and I lost some time and a few positions. The grip was a little better after we changed the settings, so I was able to regain some places. I caught Biaggi near the end but did not have enough to get past. Valencia is still not my favourite circuit, but I like Assen so I’m looking forward to going there.

Ronald ten Kate – team manager

Kiyo-san has shown that he can do the times of the fastest riders when he is on race tyres. We need to convert that into good qualifying positions and an ability to match those times under racing conditions, which is very different to doing one fast lap. We clearly have work to do and we will be doing nothing else between now and the first practice session at Assen. This is our home race and, of course, we want to perform much better there and for the rest of this season.

Neither Checa nor Rea finished the first 23-lap race at the 4.005km Ricardo Tormo circuit just outside Valencia – Rea crashing early on the opening lap after it appeared another rider nudged him from behind.

Checa ran off the circuit at the final turn – also early in the race – but the Spaniard was able to rejoin the fray, albeit at the back of the field. He retired from the race two laps early.

In the second outing, both riders got reasonable starts but rear grip problems forced Rea to drop down the field, while Checa was able to fight his way up to sixth – the team’s only reward after a difficult weekend.

Carlos Checa – DNF & 6th

Race one was a little bit better than race two, but still not where we want to be. In the first race, my start was not so good and as I approached the final turn behind Tom Sykes, I hit the white line during braking. There was no grip so I had no alternative but to go into the gravel. I tried to get some data from the tyre, but it wouldn’t let me go fast enough to learn anything so I pulled in. My start in race two put me in a better position for braking into the first turn, but when the race settled down I found that I couldn’t open the throttle with the bike on its side. I was able to make up some places and sometimes racing here at Valencia is enough motivation but it wasn’t our day today.

Jonathan Rea – DNF & 13th

I got a pretty good start in race one and had the bike cranked right over coming out of the first right-hander. The next thing I knew I was up in the air, hanging on to the bike but missing the seat when I landed. And that was that. We didn’t really have any information to change anything for race two but it wasn’t great. It’s been a tough few days so all I can do is thank my team for all their hard work this weekend and say that we’ll re-group for Assen and try to get some decent results for the team’s home race.

Ronald ten Kate – team manager

There are no excuses for these results – we simply haven’t performed well enough this weekend and we all know that we must improve things from this moment. Everyone is working hard to find a way forward, but we will arrive at Assen for our home race in less than three weeks and we must achieve the results that the hard work of the team deserves.

The Japanese ace has been comfortable with his race pace for most of the weekend and made it through to the final 16 after the first of this afternoon’s three Superpole stages at the 4.005km Ricardo Tormo circuit. Kiyonari went out first on a race tyre but then utilised the first of his two allotted qualifiers to guarantee progression.

Kiyonari also used a qualifier in Superpole 2 but the lap time was not quite enough to see him through to the final eight riders fighting out for positions on the front two rows.

Ryuichi Kiyonari – P9, 1’34.536s

I was able to do a 34.7s lap on a race tyre, which is pretty close to my time on a qualifier, so maybe we could just get rid of qualifiers?! We have done a 10-lap test and we’re quite happy with the race pace and it feels stronger than what we had here last year. I need two good starts tomorrow to make two good results and I need them now so I will be trying my best in the races.

Ronald ten Kate – team manager

It’s a pity to see Kiyo-san on the third row and missing out on the top eight when he’s been consistently fast on race tyres all weekend. I think he has the potential to race at the same pace as the other front runners, so it’s important that he gets good starts, because Valencia can be difficult if you don’t get away with the leaders.
